A while back my Mom cleaned out her craft room and found a string art kit that my Grandpa had purchased in the 70's. It was still sealed in its original packaging, and was in the donate pile so I brought it home to complete. I usually have fun making vintage craft kits, and I hadn't done any string art before. I was surprised that the ship, water, and flags were printed on cardboard to be glued to the black velvet before adding the string art sails. Since I had some extra embroidery thread left over from past projects, I decided to stitch it free hand based on the drawings before adding the string art sails.
I absolutely love how it turned out! The string art is very dimensional, and the embroidery really pops on the black fabric. I like the look of the vivid colors against the black background, and have been keeping an eye out for another pattern to try out out some black velvet scraps that I have in my craft stash.
The string art thread seems to be a lightweight cotton string, like you would use to make a doily or lace. And the velvet is just glued to an inch thick piece of masonite. I am not sure if I would do string art again, as it is a little dated, but I love the added dimension.
